And so it Ends

Drove to Naples yesterday, Saturday and it was a sunny day, and really warm; warmest of the whole trip. Got to our "hotel" room by 2:00 p.m., caught our breath after the drive and then returned the rental car at the airport.  A 10 minute walk back to our place.  Went out to dinner at the Trattoria du Papa nearby which was an interesting way to spend the evening - no pictures available! Sometime we'll tell you all about it. 

On Sunday took the bus to the central train station in Naples  and then hopped a train to Pompeii to join a guided tour of the site we had booked.  Of course an amazing, vast place and on a sunny Sunday it was just jam packed. The massive eruption that completely covered Pompei occurred in AD 79, though the place was inhabited since the 7th century BC. Incredible that you can still see frescoes, original lead pipes for heating and transporting water, etc. Hard to describe it all but a few pics:

We returned to Naples on a standing room only train. The trip was made perhaps a little too exciting by a stolen and then (miraculously) recovered wallet (passport and credit cards intact, about 75 Euros missing) - full details available later. Still de-stressing from the event as we write this . . .

Tomorrow we head to the airport in the morning for our flight home- arriving in Charlottetown (hopefully) after midnight on Tuesday morning.  We will need some time to reflect on it all!

 Last Full Day in Palermo Friday was a rainy day which limited our wanderings a bit.  Did manage to explore a bit  around the historical centre of Palermo.  Discovered that recovery time from jet lag does not get shorter as one ages.  Just stayed for the evening and had an early night.  The Quattro Canti Saturday was a bright sunny and almost warm day.  Did a guided walking tour around the centre  Recovered with a Limoncello Spritz in a nearby piazza afterwards. Met up with Maria, a Servas host, who toured us through her neighbourhood  near the harbour.  She then invited us to join her at a International Women's Day fund raising choral concert for Afganistan.  Just figured more Gastroporn required Picking up rental car tomorrow morning and will try some Sicilian driving.  Wish us luck.

Truly Trulli in the Valle D'Itria

The weather held off fairly well today - gray but not rainy or windy.  Decided to visit some of the other towns of the Valle D'Itria.  First went to Martina Franca and made a visit to the Basilica di San Martino and wandered around the centro storico.  Moved on to Alberobello, home of the Trulli village, where we were joined by apparently every school child in Puglia on class outings.  After having had the other towns pretty much to ourselves we were a little overwhelmed but at least did manage a quick tour.     And we finally had to resort to Google to figure out what all of the hanging (and sometimes sitting) female figures were.   Quarantana, Puglia’s lugubrious old Lenten maid

Down at the Heel

 Made it all the way down to the bottom of the heel on Thursday.  A great drive, mostly on small country roads through olive groves and vineyards.  Arrive at our digs in Salve, got settled, supplied and oriented.  Friday hit the road for a little touring.  Checked out the weekly market at a neighbouring town and then headed to the Adriatic coast.  Amazing coastal drive on tiny winding roads.     Managed to stop for lunch in the village of Tricase Porto and of course had to check out the seafood on offer.   After that lunch, a quiet night in store for us!
